20th October 2007 - Dainton Connell RIP

The funeral of Dainton Connell, long-time friend and former assistant to Pet Shop Boys took place yesterday.
Thousand of people walked from Arsenal's Emirates stadium through the streets of Islington, North London, yesterday morning in tribute to Dainton Connell, a.k.a. "The Bear". In a remarkable scene, more like a state funeral than a private internment, Holloway Road was closed by the police to allow the procession to take place. Then mourners including Chris Lowe, Neil Tennant, ex-Arsenal footballers Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, Little Britain stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, boxer Frank Bruno, journalist and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, singer Sylvia Mason-James, and hundreds of friends and Arsenal supporters joined Dainton's wife and family for the funeral service at St Mary Magdalane Church conducted by three vicars, including the priest who married Dainton and his wife Mandy 31 years ago. Past and present PSB managers David Dorrell, Mitch Clark and Jill Carrington were also present, along with members of the Lowe and Tennant families. Chris Lowe read from The Bible (Revelation 21: 1-7) as part of the service. The service was broadcast via speakers to a huge crowd standing outside the church in bright sunshine.
Once again, thank you to all fans and friends who have sent messages of condolence and flowers.

19th October 2007 - Dainton Connell

Dainton's funeral will take place in North London today and will be preceded by a tribute march from the Arsenal Emirates stadium. A huge number are expected to take part.

18th October 2007 - PSB Fans Charity Album

Pet Shop Boys came up in the music business over 20 years ago. Since then, they have been a great inspiration for their fans who learned and took from them an incredible musical culture/background. Pet Shop Boys are living proof that we all can endure and even be better all through the years. Their fans (like father, like children) decided to try their luck in the world of music. Philanthropy is not a tribute to the Masters of synthpop. This album does not include any cover version of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe's songs. You can find original tunes inspired by the Pet Shop Boys' career.
'Philanthropy' contains enjoyable dance songs with strong lyrics and electronic backgrounds that show a wide variety of styles. Every fan/musician is leaving a personal print here. This promising project was born at tennant-lowe.com forum: A fan under the nickname of "twisted logic" suggested the idea of taking an advantage from the fans who were musicians to produce an album. People from the forum just loved it and we all started to work on it immediately. We chose fans with experience in the music world. Artists like KooLTURE, an Argentine singer and producer who is presently making the rounds with songs of his own as well as a beautiful cover version of classic Pet Shop Boys' hit 'Heart'.
The album is almost done and the first 4-track EP will be digitally released by Bit Records Mexico in November 2007.
A large percentage of the profits obtained from digital downloads/sales will go to "Hereford Kids First", a British charity association run by Mark Price, another PSB fan. Some songs will also be released as digital singles full of remixes. Profits from the remixes sales will go to both charity association and remixers/artists.
One of the pleasant surprises of the album is the producer and musician Chris Kalera, who is also known as Dynarec, whose vocals sound similar to Neil Tennant's. He has collaborated with so many areas of production, singing and adding vocals to various songs. Chris kalera started making music about ten years ago. Heavily influenced by the 80's synthetic pop sounds, he's into techno as well (on his ckal label), electro (he releases as "dynArec"), and more detroitish stuff are produced under the "speakwave" alias. His classical formation allows him to write tunes very quickly, and he probably has hundreds of unreleased tracks somewhere in his lair...
For more information on the artists, songs and the charity association, please visit the Official PSB Fans Philanthropy website.

12th October 2007 - Bucharest And Moscow Concerts

The Pet Shop Boys regret to announce that the date of their concert in Bucharest must be changed from Friday 19th October 19th 2007 to Sunday 25th November 2007.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Dainton Connell, the legal formalities required by the authorities, both in Moscow and the UK, combined with the wide number of factors that his family had to take into account when arranging the funeral, the funeral cannot take place until Friday 19th October 2007. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe must attend the funeral out of respect for one of their oldest friends and former employees and his family. The Pet Shop Boys apologise for any inconvenience caused. They hope all will understand the good reasons for postponing the show.
The rescheduled concert on Friday 25th November 2007, will take place at the same venue and all tickets remain valid for the new date. This is the first available date at the Sala Palatului. Changing to a new venue would have made the inconvenience to fans even worse as all the tickets would have to be re-issued. The Pet Shop Boys are looking forward to their first visit to Bucharest and Romania and would like to thank all fans for their understanding.
The Moscow concert planned for Wednesday 7th November 2007 did not go on sale at the beginning of this week as planned because of the tragic accident there. We are currently in discussion with the promoters about when this concert will take place. Chris Lowe would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the British Consulate in Moscow for their sympathetic and invaluable help over the last week.

11th October 2007 - Disco 4.1

8th October 2007 - Dainton Connell RIP

Neil and Chris would like to thank everyone who has sent in messages of sympathy to the family and friends of Dainton Connell at this sad time. Some fans in Moscow have left flowers at the site of the accident and, again, we would like to thank them for their kindness and condolences.
A march was held in North London yesterday before the home game at Arsenal. Approximately 400 people participated, carrying flowers and photographs of "The Bear". As we said in our earlier report, those who met him, did not forget him.

6th October 2007 - Dainton Connell

Dainton Connell was killed in a car accident in Moscow in the early hours of this morning. He was in Moscow accompanying Chris Lowe who was planning to DJ at a friend's nightclub there tonight. The friend driving him lost control of the car. There was no one else in the car.
Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant are "devastated" by this tragic news. They had known Dainton for almost 20 years, during which time he had worked for the Pet Shop Boys as security and later as personal assistant. He was also a close friend.
"Dainton was a warm, kind, loveable friend, a huge Arsenal fan and a larger-than-life character, famous in North London and beyond. We are devastated by his sudden and tragic death and our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, Mandy, and their family."
Dainton (also known as "The Bear") accompanied the Pet Shop Boys on their tours from 1989 to 2000. He can be seen in the videos for the Pet Shop Boys' singles, 'Jealousy', 'So Hard' and 'Was It Worth It?' as well as in the 'Somewhere' concert film. We know that he was a familiar and friendly face to many PSB fans who encountered him over the years and that they will share in our grief and sorrow. Those who met him will never forget him.

So Pet Shop Boys and all the many fans online wish Chris a very warm and happy 48th birthday!

Located in three tented structures pitched in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, the home of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Some Days Never End will apply equal weight to both music and art. Given the time of year, these structures will be heated. The third structure will feature high standard wide ranging food and drink."

18th September 2007 - Bucharest Change Of Venue

14th September 2007 - Integral Video

The Pet Shop Boys signal the release of 'Disco 4', the fourth album in a continuing series, with a groundbreaking video for the politically-inspired new track 'Integral'.
Picking up on the song's themes of ID cards and the erosion of civil liberties by the government, the Pet Shop Boys have worked with new creative group the Rumpus Room to conceive and create a sinister mix of surveillance type footage and information technology as content for their new music video.
Embedded in this dystopian film are single frames of Quick Response (or QR) Code, a new barcode technology which works in a similar way to supermarket checkout scanners.
For the first time ever in a Pet Shop Boys video, fans will be able to access embedded codes linking to featured websites simply by pausing the video on the QR Code frame and taking a snapshot with their mobile camera.
The various sites and online news articles and forums reflect the song’s subject matter in highlighting campaigns for freedom and civil liberty.
Two versions of the 'Integral' video are available, the first a low resolution graphic version optimised for portable devices such as mobile phones, and the second in higher resolution for traditional broadcast needs.
Both versions successfully mix the 'fluid' technology of the internet (links etc), the functions we use to consume film and video (pause, rewind etc) and the new tools that we use to document our social environment such as camera phones.
Dan Duncombe, Head of Digital, Parlophone, comments: "Pet Shop Boys once again prove their pioneering use of digital technology with their latest promo video. In typical PSB style they have gone one step further creating an innovative, informative and engaging video that is a perfect fit for the song's lyrical content."

19th August 2007 - Pet Shop Boys Need You

The Pet Shop Boys are seeking 200 people to appear in their new video for the upcoming release of their anti-ID card track 'Integral', for which filming takes place in Central London this Tuesday 21st August 2007.
200 people are needed to attend Whitefield Memorial Church, 79a Tottenham Court Road, on Tuesday afternoon (between 3pm and 7pm) who are needed to variously hold up printed frames of the video clip to their faces or move around in the background. They can't pay anyone, but there will be refreshments, and it's for a great cause. Neil and Chris were already filmed and will not attend the filming. The video develops the lyrical theme of ID cards and the erosion of civil liberties in the UK by central government and combines a mix of surveillance type footage and information technology. Also embedded in the film are single frames of QR Code, a new Bar Code technology that is readable by the camera in people's mobile phones. The QR Codes contain url destinations that elaborate on the issues, and encourage viewers to get active. Everyone involved will get a credit at the end of the video, from one of the barcodes. There's no dress code.

11th August 2007 - Tony Wilson

Chris and Neil are very sad to hear of the death of Tony Wilson, the founder of Factory Records. They would like to express their condolences to his friends and family and the members of New Order. 10th August 2007 - Disco 4

The Pet Shop Boys are preparing the Parlophone release of the latest in their series of 'Disco' remix albums. Whereas previous albums in the series have mainly included remixes of Pet Shop Boys tracks by other artists and DJs, Chris and Neil were keen to collect on one album some of their remixes of other artists and their own recent remixes of Pet Shop Boys tracks. Accordingly, 'Disco 4' will include the Pet Shop Boys' extended dance mixes of The Killers, David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Madonna, Atomizer and Rammstein, as well as a new extended mix of 'Integral' and their maxi-mix of 'I'm With Stupid'. The album will be released on CD but not on digital download stores as digital release rights were not available from the artists concerned. The provisional release date is Monday 24th September 2007 but this may change. 'Disco 4' follows on from 'Disco' (1986), 'Disco 2' (1994) and 'Disco 3' (2003).
Pet Shop Boys would like to thank The Killers, Madonna, David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Rammstein and Atomizer for allowing their songs to appear on this album.
Reports of 'Integral' being released as a single are inaccurate, although promo copies of 'Integral - PSB Perfect Immaculate Mix' will be made available to club DJs and selected radio DJs. A politically-inspired video for the track is currently being edited. The song was originally written as a protest against the proposed introduction of ID cards in the UK and the gradual erosion of personal freedom taking place in the current political climate, the video reflects this. Pre-order 'Disco 4': UK CD. The track listing is as follows:

CD (?):
Read My Mind - PSB Stars Are Blazing Mix The Killers
Hallo Spaceboy - PSB Extended Mix David Bowie/Pet Shop Boys
Integral - PSB Perfect Immaculate Mix Pet Shop Boys

Following their acclaimed Australian Premiere Season, the Original Australian Cast of 'Seriously - Pet Shop Boys Reinterpreted' will appear at the Roxy Main, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007, from Tuesday 2nd August 2007 to Monday 27th August 2007. This is not an "official" Pet Shop Boys production but is a very creative reworking of Tennant/Lowe songs in a theatrical setting. According to the official press release:

This introspective musical production strips back the hi-energy songs of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe with dazzling results....Created by writer David Knox and arranger Dean Lotherington, this daring reinvention of the catalogue musical of over 25 songs lays somewhere between concert, cabaret and musical theatre. With a stunning string quartet and soaring vocals, the audience is witness to a compelling evening in an intimate and elegant setting.

3rd January 2007 - UK Chart Revamp

A chart revamp puts downloads first. Album tracks, B-sides and golden oldies could now enter the top 40 since chart rules were changed on Monday 1st January 2007. The shake-up means that any download will count towards the top 75, even if it is not available on the high street.
Test charts show that Christmas songs by Wham and Mariah Carey would have been in the Christmas festive top 40 under the new rules. CD singles will also be allowed extra tracks and extended running times to help them compete with downloads. Steve Redmond, director of the UK Official Charts Company said, "This new ruling changes the nature of a single and puts the consumer in the driving seat. Literally any track can be a hit - as long as it sells enough."
Previously, downloads only counted towards the chart in the week before a song was released on CD, and until two weeks after the CD was deleted. The first revamped top 40 will be revealed on Sunday 7th January 2007.

2nd January 2007 - Hogmany Hits Extravagaza Cancelled

Everything was ready for Pet Shop Boys' Hogmamany Hits Extravanganza in Edinburgh on New Year's Eve, the set list was drawn up and rehearsed, the soundcheck took place in the early afternoon and Neil and Chris were in their hotel rooms waiting to go to the concert site. At 8.40pm, the sad news came through that the show could not go ahead because of the bad weather with rain and winds of up to 70mph causing damage to the concert site and stage and potential injury to the audience. Up to 100,000 people were expected to celebrate on the streets in Edinburgh. Similar celebrations in Glasgow, Belfast, Liverpool, Newcastle and Stirling were cancelled for the same reason.
Neil commented, "We are very disappointed that the Edinburgh New Year's celebrations have been cancelled because of high winds and the danger of people getting injured. And we are sorry for everyone who has travelled to see us and also for the organisers who have spent months putting together what should have been one amazing night."
Instead of playing the concert, Chris and Neil and their singers, dancers, crew and friends went to a club to welcome in a somewhat muted New Year. Ironically, the worldwide New Year celebrations began with Pet Shop Music: the fireworks display in Sydney, Australia, which was broadcast around the world, began with the introduction to 'Numb'.
